Initial Appointment - What to Expect

Initial Appointment

Our aim is to make sure your visits with us will be relaxed and informative. Your initial appointment will consist of a facial and oral examination including clinical photographs.

We usually require a second appointment if treatment is indicated to discuss treatment options, take study models and any orthodontic x-rays which are required. Once all your records are collected then a full treatment plan can be presented to you.

Missed Appointments

If for some reason you cannot make it to your appointment, please contact our office at 01329 284 419. By doing so you allow another patient to use that time as well as reschedule your appointment. There is a charge for appointments missed without a reasonable 24 hours notice.

Successive Visits

Periodic visits are an important part of orthodontic treatment. Generally, we will want to see you every 6-10 weeks to check your progress and make adjustments to your braces. During this time, you will need to keep appointments, follow instructions, as well as practice good oral hygiene and proper nutrition. Also continue to visit your dentist regularly. Once your braces are removed, retainers are fitted to hold your teeth in their new positions until your bone, gums, and muscles adapt to the new teeth positions. The retention period is an important part of your overall treatment and should not be neglected

Retention

Once your braces are removed, evening and night-time clear plastic retainers are fitted to hold your teeth in their new positions. Retention is an important part of your overall treatment and should not be neglected. Everyone’s teeth move throughout life whether or not you have had braces. If you stop wearing your retainers after one year of retention then some people will have no relapse and some people will have some or a lot of relapse. Unfortunately no-one can predict beforehand who will have relapse. If you want guarantee your teeth to stay exactly their new ideal position for the rest of your life, then you will need to have long term retention. Please ask about this before treatment starts if you are unsure what long-term retention means.

Length of Treatment

Braces may be worn between 12 months to 24 months, or longer depending on the age of the patient, the severity of the problem, the patient's cooperation, and the degree of movement possible. Our aim is to achieve and ideal outcome for you in the minimum of time.

Dental Care

Before any orthodontic treatment, your general dentist should make certain that all cavities (decay) have been treated and the health of your gums and underlying bone are free of periodontal disease.

In addition, your dentist or an oral surgeon will remove any teeth that David has prescribed to correct your bite. Your family dentist should also schedule cleaning and cavity checkup visits during your orthodontic care. You must keep your regular visits with your general dentist because we are specialists looking only after your brace not your general dental health.

Please contact our practice if you have any questions. The timing of your treatment is very important. You or your child may or may not be ready for treatment. Therefore, a consultation will allow us to better understand your needs.

Diagnostic Records & Treatment Planning

Once a specific treatment plan has been formulated for your orthodontic needs, then our office will give you a call to review your treatment plan, set up the necessary appointments to begin your orthodontic treatment. At the same time any financial arrangements will also be set up for you. You will always know exactly what the treatment costs are in total before you start treatment, using our fixed price quotations. There are no surprises.
